As heard on the news the outbreak of the COVID Virus (Corona Virus) is starting to spread into the United States, but is it as scary as the news saying it is?

“The news makes it much more scarier than what it actually is.” Said Tammy Shimon Head of the Nursing Program at Iowa Lakes. “The older generation people and people of all ages with severe underlying health conditions — like heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, for example — seem to be at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness.  CDC has information for other special population, who at this time are not considered high risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness, but are at increased risk of severe illness from other infectious diseases. These include pregnant women and children.”

“This virus seems to be attacking more older male than it is females.” Said Jim Creech who is part of the Active Medical Staff at Avera Hospital. “If a person becomes ill, stay away from others.

Shimon says, “Wash your hands, Wash your hands, Wash your hands (at minimum 20 seconds).  Sneeze into your arm/elbow region or sneeze into a Kleenex, then wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. By eating and drinking  Citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges), Kiwi, Papaya, Spinach, Nuts =Almonds, Poultry, Shell fish=Crab, Clams, Lobster, Mussels, Yogurt, Broccoli, Green tea you are helping your self to protect from getting the virus.”

Creech later on says, “Do not travel to areas of high disease prevalence. It is definitely not as scary as media is making it out to be. The news seems to make it seem more scary to push you not to travel out of the United States.

People are starting to overreact by going out and buying bulks of hand soap, mask, gloves, and toilet paper which seems unnecessary. If you are planning on traveling look at cdc.gov and plan from there.

Some Colleges in Iowa are starting to switch to online classes due to the virus. For local information make sure to check News Updates on your local TV provider.
