Movie Night on the Emmetsburg Campus

Students gathered to watch the Titanic sinking in the Wellness Center on Wednesday night. James Cameron’s 1997 romantic tragedy of the same name was shown four days in anticipation of Valentine’s Day.

Making their way through the cold outside, students that attended were greeted with tickets to a door prize and a table of hot chocolate, popcorn, cupcakes, and assorted drinks. The campus senate linked a school project with a student’s laptop between aisles of seating arranged in front of an inflatable screen.

The movie was well received with among the attendants. Every suggestive moment in the film enticed gasps from members of the audience. Cameron’s motion captured visual effects are deceivingly lifelike over twenty years later. The movie itself is older than the majority of the student body. The action made me flinch in my seat while speaking with Senate President Nathan Schneider. The President being a self-proclaimed “Titanic aficionado,” it felt appropriate to quiz him on the film’s historic detail.

Q: How long was the Titanic’s voyage expected to be?

A: I want to say… it left April 12th and was expected to arrive on the 17th.

Q: Did Lieutenant Murdoch really kill himself?

A: I can’t remember. It’s possible.

At the end of the film Nathan drew tickets out of a gift bag, leaving prizes left over to make sure everyone in attendance walked away with anything from a pen to a blanket from the Iowa Lakes bookstore. Remaining stocking hats helped students endure the freezing air between the Wellness Center and their dormitories and cars.

Keeping with their historical theme, campus senators will show Hidden Figures at 7:00 PM next week on Tuesday night in the same location.
