Iowa Lakes Community College is home to a vast variety of programs. Students can study from Aviation, all the way to Wind Technology. One program that is not mentioned very often is the Broadcasting program. Students who are a part of the broadcasting program have expressed many positive reviews about the program. One of those students is Cody Vandenberg.
“I feel the broadcasting program is awesome for students,” he said.
Vandenberg mentioned that it is encouraging that the program has been adding more numbers has the years have gone on.
“The numbers are growing since the program has started,” said Vandenberg.
He also expressed that the program has helped prepare him for his future in broadcasting.
“The program has prepared me pretty well for my future,” he said.
“I have learned all the correct information up to this point,” said the second year broadcasting student.
Due to Covid 19, the broadcasting students have not been able to do certain aspects of the program. One of those things is broadcasting Iowa Lakes’ basketball games. Vandenberg says he cannot wait to get back in the broadcasting booth for the basketball games.
“I can’t wait to do the sports games again for this spring,” said an excited Vandenberg.
Mitchell Hagenson, another broadcasting student, also gave high praise for the program. Hagenson found out about the program when his parents signed him up for a college visit to Iowa Lakes.
“I found out about the broadcasting program when my parents and my best friends parents signed us both up for different college tours two years ago,” he said.
Hagenson, during the visit, got to meet one of the broadcasting professors Kevin Tlam.
“I would then end up meeting Kevin TIam, who is one of the main professors for the program,” he said.
“He told me and my parents all about what this program is about and what they do here,” said Hagenson.
Hagenson favorite part of the program has been learning about how to use social media.
“The most interesting thing I’ve learned from the program so far, would have to be just seeing how social media is used a lot (in) broadcasting,” he said.
“I just thought when it came to advertising anything broadcasting, it would be through one or two of your social media platforms, but no, the more content the better,” said Hagenson.
Hagenson says that the broadcasting program has helped prepare for his future in broadcasting as well.
“Yes, I think it has helped me a lot, because if it wasn’t for this program I wouldn’t know what I want to do in the next chapter of my life,” he said.
The Iowa Lakes broadcasting program is one of the most unique programs on campus. As more students join the program in the coming years, the program will be able to help more students discover their love for broadcasting.
