HACKED

As sick of hearing about COVID-19, Trump, or Biden people are, covid at least has forced the United States to adopt a “new normal” to keep the virus from spreading. Many gatherings are prohibited and sports programs look a lot different than they did just last year.

This has caused a rise in meetings online using programs like Zoom, Skype, and Discord to hang out and keep in contact with friends and family. Iowa Lakes in particular has taken to letting students join in on mass social interactions over Zoom. Trivia night for Lakers happened over Zoom on Nov 4.

The hosts Emily Grace and Seth Vander held the contest using a free app called Kahoot!. Similar to Jackbox Games, participants used their phones to log into the game and answer the questions as fast as they could to gain points. The game was available to all Iowa College students and had three categories. Each category had 25 questions and after the game an over all winner would be announced as well as bragging rights given to which ever school did best based on the students answers.

Students had a blast interacting with each other in chat as well as joking with the hosts through out the game. Even giving out their best puns and “Dad jokes.”

Unfortunately, halfway through the second category, healthy lifestyles, the game to a grinding halt when a sudden young voice sounded over the zoom call shouting profanities. The call got HACKED. Much to the frustration of the hosts and participants.

While the voice was quickly kicked from the call, the damage had been done as more and more voices suddenly joined in asking what was going on and if this was their class. Seemingly, the link to the call was shared somewhere by the original troll and the call couldn’t be saved.

Seth Vander apologized for sudden interruption and rescheduled the game for next Tuesday at 3pm. Any students interested in joining in should watch their school emails for a new link to the game.
