As the end of Basketball season wraps, Golf is approaching upon us. This year’s team consists of eight men and five women for a total thirteen students. There are 9 returning sophomores and 4 new players for this year’s team in total. Coach Jarvis Weber talks about the team and what to expect for this year’s golf season at Iowa Lakes.
“The men’s team they were very successful this year they have won a couple of tournaments,” said Jarvis. “You can expect them to come out every single day and be right their and try to win about every tournament they go into. The women’s team are kind of in the same boat. They had some good success last year. They are trying to build off of that for sure. We’re missing a couple of big shoes from the graduating class last year, but the new freshmen coming in while the sophomores are leading the team, so you can expect them to be in the mix for all of the tournaments that we go into.”
When it comes to having a good college team, their are goals that need to be accomplished. Joey Murphy, a sophomore on the golf team, would talk about some of the teams short-term and long-term goals as a team.
“For a our short term goals, just two months after the season starts, we would like to average about a 75 or a 76,” said Joey. “Hopefully are team can shoot under 300. It’s usual like every other time when it comes to the golf seasons. Long-term goals would have to be hoping to go to the National Tournament this year and then winning a couple of tournaments would be nice too.”
Joey would continue on talking about what there is to look forward to when it comes to their season this year. “We hopefully look forward to the birdies and pars that we can all possibly get this year, plus good numbers to score too. We especially are looking forward to good weather, because that can always be a struggle out here when you’re out here in Iowa at least.”
Jarvis Weber has been coaching for this team since November of 2016. This will be Jarvis’ fourth year coaching for the Iowa Lakes Golf Team. He believes that this years team has the full potential of having a great season and also believing that they can make it to the National Tournament, “All they have to just push, it’s right in front of them, all they have to do is just push.” He would then talk about his long and short term goals as coach for his team.
“My short term goal would have to be just reach for the title. It’s just something that I’ve always wanted. It’s just been my ultimate goal. I’ve played here for two years and we’ve always just came in as second, so I’ve never have quite tasted that. That’s what is pushing me every single day. My long term goal would just pushing this program every single step, every single day and seeing every single kid here in this program develop. There all talented kids, and I can’t wait to see what they can bring to the next on the next step journey in their lives.”
There are a lot of things to be excited about for this year’s golfing team. The Women’s first tournament will be in Kansas City, Missouri at Baker University on Monday, March 23rd. The Men’s first tournament will be on Friday, March 27th. It will be down in Maryville, Missouri at Graceland University.
