Break out the brooms! Lakers sweep doubleheader

Lakers sweep doubleheader

The Iowa Lakes men’s and women’s basketball teams were in action on Monday, November 25th. The Lakers hosted Northwestern JV in a doubleheader that featured both teams coming out victorious.

The women kicked off the doubleheader and they started hot. The Lakers dominated the Red Raiders in the first half of the game, leading by as many as 30 points. However, the Red Raiders made a storm in the back half of the 3rd quarter onward. The Lakers held on to win 88-80. Brianna Wendland led the way for the Lakers tallying 32 points, often times going for her favorite shot: the left-handed layup.

“It’s my go-to shot.” Said Wendland. “I’ve worked really hard on being able to  drive to the hoop and make that shot. It worked well here against Northwestern.”

The win against Northwestern was impressive, but the Lakers’ 30 point lead was nearly squandered. Coach Ashley Martin explained that her team played well, but the game shouldn’t have gotten as close as it did.

“We played 3 good quarters here tonight.” Martin said. “Going forward we’re going to have to put 4 good quarters together in order to win games.”

Iowa Lakes improved their record to 7-2 on the season. They will be back in action on November 30th when they head to Mason City for a pair of games over the weekend.

Laker men dominate, push win streak to 7

At the beginning of the men’s game, a brief illusion of a close game appeared. The first half was relatively close and ended with a score of 55-42. The second half, on the other hand, was all Iowa Lakes. The Lakers exploded in the early minutes of the second half and ended up winning 117-78.

Sophomore Boston Grimes tallied 23 points, but it was an all-around team effort. 4 other Lakers ended the game in double figures. Xavier Evans added 19, Dillon Carlson put up 15, Justin Brookens tallied 13, and Alan Kikwaki ended with 12.

Coach Troy Larson was mostly satisfied with his team’s performance, but he again stressed the importance of getting off to a fast start, which the Lakers have struggled with early on this season.

“We came out flat to start the game.” Said Larson, “Our energy level wasn’t great but responded and played a better second half. We’re going to need to get that figured out before conference play begins.”

With the winning streak advanced to 7, the Lakers improved their overall record to 7-2. The men will travel to NIACC to take part in the Thanksgiving Basketball Challenge on November 30th for their next games.
