Lakers Face-Off Against Iowa Central

The Lakers started their wrestling season at home on Wednesday, November 13th against Iowa Central. This was a tough matchup for the Lakers and caused some irritating matches for the Lakers. The Lakers fell 17-29 against the Tritons and fell early in the match.

The Lakers first started out with three exhibition matches that didn’t count towards the actual match. The first three matches went well for the Lakers with only one loss which helped give the Lakers confidence going into first matchups of the night. The first wrestler to compete in the actual matchup was from freshman Matthew Jordan competing in the 125 weight class. Jordan started the match out strong and quickly dominated for the Lakers. He earned a victory for the Lakers giving more confidence to the Lakers to continue.

The other big player though for the night was Robert Hall the third. Hall is ranked 8th in the nation right now in the 141 weight class. Hall is a very important part of the Laker team and dominated his match very quickly. Hall was leading the match and then quickly earned a pin against his opponent. Hall is a sophomore for the Lakers and is an important leader for the Lakers.

“Tonight at the beginning of the dual we had a lot of energy,” said Hall, “We fought hard and then in the middle we started to get lopsided, but we had so much energy from the crowd tonight and I just really appreciate everyone coming out and supporting us for our first home matchup.”

Hall felt really well about his matchup tonight. He expects the team to start fighting a little bit more and wants the team to continue to work hard.

“I feel like we have a good solid team we just need to continue to wrestle till the very last whistle blows,” said Hall, “We just need to keep pushing the pace the whole time and not give up.”

Coach Cody Alesch thought that the team did well tonight, but also needs to continue to improve.

“The guys on the team who are aggressive and creating offensive opportunities for themselves are the ones who are winning a lot of matches for us and that was evident tonight,” said Alesch, “When you wrestle a team as tough as Iowa Central there is adversity fight through.”

The Lakers will be back in action this Saturday at Grandview in Des Moines at the Grandview open. The next home meet will be on January 14th in Spirit Lake against NIACC.
