Momentum is a huge part of every sport. Getting off on the right foot is always a big way to build momentum. The Iowa Lakes Wrestling team kicked off their regular season at the Yellow-Jacket Open in Rochester, Minnesota on November 2nd.
Freshman Matt Jordan led the Lakers, going 4-1 on the day and eventually losing in the tournament final in the first tournament of his college career. 2 of those wins were by pinball and the other 2 were by major decision. Iowa Lakes wrestling coach Cody Alesch was impressed by the dominant performance by Jordan.
“Matt has been committed since the first day he got to Iowa Lakes and that work is paying off,” said coach Alesch. Good things will continue to happen for him as he builds off this first weekend. We are excited for him because he is determined and as coachable as they come.”
Two more Lakers, Mitchell Williamson and Robert Hall, made it to the semifinal round of the tournament and were defeated there. Coach Alesch made the decision to default wrestlers Deville Dentis and Austin Hinzman to ensure they would be healthy for the next meet. Overall, Alesch was pleased with his squad’s performance.
“We saw what we needed to see from the team for the most part,” Alesch said. “Overall as a coaching staff we thought the guys fought hard and showed us what we were looking for. We need to get tougher, but we are a young team that will grow and the potential for a great season is there. We have a group that needs to see that picture like we do as coaches then believe in themselves. We are looking forward to what is ahead for us.”
The Lakers will return to action on November 6th at the Iowa Western Duel in Council Bluffs.
