Just about everyone knows that figuring out what you want to for college and a career is a tough decision. Some lucky people just know from a young age exactly what they want to do and have a plan set for college onwards starting in high school. For many others, the sheer number of possibilities can lead to indecision. Luckily for them, there are programs and events to showcase some possible education and career paths to help inspire these folks. One of these events, “College, Me? Yes!” takes place across the campuses of Iowa lakes Community College.
The event showcases some of the programs offered at the Emmetsburg, Estherville, and Spencer campuses of Iowa Lakes. Emmetsburg’s event on Oct 23 included Agribusiness Technology, Agriculture Production Technology, Construction Technology, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Nursing, Powersports and Power Equipment Technology, and Welding Technology. Spencer will preview Massage Therapy, Medical Assistant Specialist, Medical Office Technology, and Surgical Technology on Nov 20. Before that, Estherville will hold their visit on Nov 13. Estherville’s programs being shown are: Graphic Design, Engineering Technology, Environmental Studies, and Wind Energy and Turbine Technology.
At each location, after signing in and registering the event begins with visits to each program along with an activity. Mark Rosenberg, the head of the Graphic Design Program featured at the Estherville campus is excited for these kinds of events.
“It’s a great opportunity to show students what the program is about,” Rosenberg said. “I enjoy events like this upcoming one because it feels like less of a sales pitch than the Laker Visit Days we have.”
Rosenberg enjoys sharing knowledge, evidenced by his excitement in summarizing his process for these events.
“The people come in, and I go over what we teach here in class and I show off all the cool stuff we have here, and they can ask any questions about the program as well,” he said.
Speaking of technology, there was one piece of tech that Rosenberg was especially fond of.
“We have this professional grade photo printer here, it can go up to bigger sizes like 18×24, and is loaded with seven ink cartridges. I like to call it ‘The Jaguar’,” he says with a chuckle.
After touring some of the programs, attendees have another opportunity to get a taste of the Iowa Lakes campus, this time literally, with a dinner served in the dining service area. Finally, there is an informational panel at the end of the night to provide possible students with more information on other programs offered at Iowa Lakes and about the school in general.
So if you’re having trouble deciding what path you want to take in your future, maybe this visit is a good idea for you. If you’re interested in attending the event, you can register ahead of time, or walk-ins are welcome as well.
