The Iowa Lakes women’s soccer team showed up on September 4th. The women’s team faced Minnesota West Community and Technical College at home. The final score was 31-0 Iowa Lakes. This was a huge defeat for this Lakers team.
The Lakers team started the first half off with a great showing ending the first half up 17-0. Multiple players on the team scored over five goals. This was an amazing game for the Lakers to give them momentum going into the rest of the season. Players had multiple assists so the team was using incredible amounts of teamwork to advance this game further. Head Coach Blake Viedenkamp didn’t do anything special before this specific matchup.
“We just did a normal training session to prepare for the match besides organizing our defense,” said Viedenkamp, “This is a record for Iowa Lakes and with these players only being here for two years we had to keep them working so that they can make a name for themselves. We want them to continue on at the four-year stage.”
Minnesota West is in its first year in the women’s soccer division. They had zero attempts at the goal, but they also had 13 saves which means that the team is slowly improving on the defensive end. Iowa Lakes shot at the goal 74 times which means the Lakers were shooting at the goal every minute and 13 seconds. The team had multiple outstanding players in the game including Ciara Joyce with nine goals and Isabelle Conte with seven goals.
“It felt amazing to score seven goals in one game,” said Conte, “We don’t get this chance every day, so we have to enjoy it and get prepared for the next game. We have a long season ahead of us, so we have to keep our heads in the game and take it one step at a time.”
This game was one that the Laker women’s soccer team will remember for a long time. It is a record-breaking game for the Lakers, but also when it comes to the NJCAA. The record for most goals in one game is nine so Ciara Joyce is looking at joining the record books as a Laker. The team is looking ahead to what will happen though going forward. “We are a team, so we work together, teamwork is everything so we have to connect with each other, said Conte.
The Lakers lost to the Iowa Central Tritons by four on September 10th. The next game will be played at home against Heartland Community College on the 14th at 2 pm.
