You Can Change Math

After the departure of Martin Hilberg at the end of the 2019 Spring semester, Iowa Lakes Community College was left without a math instructor. The search for a new one didn’t take very long, and at the end of it, Carl Lund was hired.

Experience the Main Factor

The main factor in choosing Carl Lund to be the new math instructor at Iowa Lakes Community College was his experience. Lund has no shortage of experience under his belt. He has spent the last 23 years teaching, but didn’t start teaching math until eleven years ago.

Head of the math department Matthew Strom said, “I didn’t know Carl before his interview, but I immediately noticed the experience he had and that played a major role in him getting the job.”

Before he taught math, Lund taught a variety of subjects which include computer science, history, English, and geography.

Tough Decisions

He was teaching at Dickinson State University in North Dakota, but the opening wasn’t difficult to find for Carl Lund. As one would expect, moving away was a hard decision to make for him.

“I found the opening on higheredjobs.com so it wasn’t hard to find. However it was a difficult decision to leave North Dakota,” said Lund, “I taught with some great people with whom I had developed close friendships.”

Lund expressed that his family also played a small role in the decision to come to Estherville as he has family in Southern Minnesota.

Along with Dickinson State, Lund has also taught in South Dakota, Nevada, and Kansas.

Despite making the tough decision to take the job at Iowa Lakes, Lund is looking forward to his future endeavors here.

“While the decision-making process was hard, I am confident that I made the right decision.” He said.
